What is ABA all about?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the study of human behavior. The discipline involves identifying and understanding the environmental factors that influence everything we do, from asking for juice to greeting a friend. By modifying our environment, we can promote the development of socially significant behavior such as language and communication, social skills, and independent living. The overarching goal of ABA is to replace challenging behavior with functional life skills that improve quality of life.
Research consistently shows that the sooner a child receives support, the greater the chance for learning and progress. ABA services can be provided in a variety of settings, including the child’s home, community, school, or local clinic. Treatment begins with an assessment by a Licensed Behavior Analyst, to identify what specific supports are needed. This assessment is then used to create individualized intervention goals that are meaningful to you and your child.
ABA services include direct therapy with your child, typically ranging from 10-35 hours per week. Services also incorporate caregiver training, which equips caregivers with the tools they need to manage challenging behavior, teach new skills, and best support their child. Clinical teams are comprised of a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA), who provides programming design and oversight, and a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), who delivers direct therapy under the guidance of a LBA.
All 50 U.S. states have adopted insurance mandates for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Under this mandate, insurance companies must cover ABA therapy for individuals with an autism diagnosis. Coverage is subject to certain limitations, which vary by insurance company and plan.
